Linda Acaster WRITER, TUTOR,
COACH
Linda Acaster offers professional one-to-one
coaching for beginner and intermediate writers of fiction for adults. By casting a critical eye over work-in-progress,
problem areas can be highlighted and suggested remedies offered via an
explanatory report and annotations made direct to the text. Incisive comment
is the aim, not vague generalisation. “I believe that fiction should act as a means of emotional communication, not merely a comfortable dry-side window on whatever world is being offered on the page. If the reader is not moved the line of communication has failed. My emphasis, therefore, is weighted towards the craft of transferring thoughts and feelings, as near as possible intact, from the writer’s to the reader’s mind.” Empathy, Show & Tell, Tone & Atmosphere,
Pacing, Viewpoint and Tense are some of the separate threads with which she
urges a writer to work. Every writer is an individual, and she believes that
every story by that writer should be, too. Linda Acaster has tutored for the Arvon Foundation
and the Open College of the Arts, and has led workshops and spoken at
writers’ conferences across the north of England. She spent six years on the
reading panel for the New Writers’ Scheme administered by the Romantic
Novelists’ Association, and two years as the co-ordinator of its Northern
Chapter. She was prominent in setting up the East Riding of Yorkshire
Novelsearch, offering writers advice on bringing their work to publishable
standard. She is a member of the Society of Authors. Her published work includes over sixty short
stories in genres as diverse as women’s, horror, crime, fantasy and SF,
published in magazines in the UK, US and Europe, three historical novels,
travel features and opinion pieces in the UK press, and an abundance of
articles on the techniques of writing fiction. She contributes to Writers’
Forum and is compiling a non-fiction book based on those articles.
